On July 24, 2011 FC Starfinder Boys U16 team that was put together to compete in the Gothia Cup returned from Gothenburg, Sweden.  It was the trip of a lifetime where friendships were created and memories that will last a lifetime were made.

The team comprised of 17 boys is leaving this Saturday, July 16, to compete in the Gothia Cup, the largest international youth soccer tournament in the world..  During the week-long trip the team will be blogging about their experiences. Read the blog here.

SKF USA Inc. Sponsors Starfinder Team at 2011 Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden

Following the awards presentation, Poul Jeppesen, president and CEO of SKF USA, made the surprise announcement that SKF USA would be paying all expenses for a Starfinder team to participate in the 2011 Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden.

On Friday, June 10 at 5:30 PM, Starfinder will celebrate the high school graduation of 20 of its Senior Leaders. Shire, one of the world’s leading specialty biopharmaceutical companies, is proud to be the sponsor of this event that recognizes the commitment, perseverance, and achievement of these young people both in school and as part of the Starfinder program.


A stunning announcement was made at the close of today's soccer tournament at Starfinder in Manayunk: SKF USA Inc. - the Swedish company with US headquarters in the Philadelphia area and sponsor of the tournament, will send 17 Starfinder players to Sweden this summer to play in the Gothia Cup, the largest youth soccer tournament in the world.

Congratulation to Laith Hamed, Kevin Rangel and Cydney Pennick on winning the Doc Cousounis Award!  This award honors Starfinder participants who exemplify the ideals that Doc Cousounis promoted throughout his life.

On Saturday, April 2, 2011 the boys in our Senior Leaders program will play the SKF Meet the World Tournament.  As tournament sponsor, SKF USA Inc. is committed to making the day a memorable one for our kids.

Congratulations to Dan Horan of Pizzazz Fitness!! He won our drawing for the soccer ball signed by the 2010 U.S. Men's National Soccer Team.

UNICEF recently released a report entitled "The Children Left Behind" that examined inequality in well-being on a wide range of measures among children in 24 of the world's richest countries. Our rankings here in the United States were among the worst.

Here at Starfinder we are focused on the physical, educational and personal development of young people from underserved communities inspiring them to achieve success both on and off the field. We promote youth leadership, a love of learning, the benefits of teamwork and the rewards of commitment and responsibility.

On January 17th we were proud to be a part of the largest Martin Luther King Day of Service in Philadelphia's history. For the second year in a row we benefitted from the support of a group of volunteers from Vanguard.  We thank the Vanguard employees for their help and time.

Recently released research compiled by Philadelphia School District reports that just 10% of students who entered a Philadelphia public high school in 1999 earned a two or four-year college degree by 2009. Starfinder has worked hard with our Senior Leaders Program and the results are positive. In June 2009, all seven of our seniors graduated high school and six went on to post-secondary matriculation. In June 2010, all seventeen of our seniors graduated and thirteen are presently enrolled in college.

Starfinder is pleased to announce that George S. Hasenecz and A. Hobart (Hobie) Porter have joined the Board of Directors.

Home is sweet, but the moments of the Football for Hope Festival 2010 has left a lasting flavor. Starfinder's very own Mustapha Alpha (18) and Nury Ortiz (16) joined up with six other high school students from four other cities to represent Team USA. Team USA was one of 32 delegations comprised of youth from disadvantaged communities from across the globe that spent 15 days in Johannesburg, South Africa for a festival celebrating education, culture and soccer.

Starfinder has received a two-year grant from the Barra Foundation to work with 60 urban middle school aged girls. This program will focus on breaking down the barriers that limit urban girls from participating in athletics.

My name is Michael Wade Arthur. I'm sixteen years of age, and I'm originally from Ghana. I moved to the States in the summer of 2008. I got to know about Starfinder through Herbert Kandeh who came to our school to talk to our soccer team... I was exposed to some surprises. I realized that Starfinder was more than a soccer club. It taught more than soccer.

High School Girls and JV Boys win YSC League

.... Developing habits of physical activity in elementary, middle, and high school girls ensures immediate health benefits and, more importantly, yields benefits that can be realized over a lifetime.  Over the next year, Starfinder will be designing and testing new programming to address the barriers that prevent urban girls from participating in sports.

Over the past month Starfinder has slowly but surely been making improvements to the interior of our facility.  In addition, we made some technological improvements, which will benefit all of Starfinders' youth.

On April 29th, the Starfinder Foundation proudly presented twenty of its participants with awards for their dedication to the Starfinder program.
Effective June 29th, Stephen H. Baumann, President and CEO, and Heidi Warren, Deputy Director, are announced as new leadership for the Starfinder Foundation.
Angel Rivillo, a member of the Philadelphia Kixx of Major League Soccer, has joined Starfinder.
