A recent study from researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that children who are physically fit do better than their peers at absorbing and retaining new information.

When is “stinky” a compliment?  When you get awarded with the Starfinder Stinky Pinnie!  This coveted award went to the hardest working teen coach each day of our summer programs this summer.  (The Stinky Pinnie recognized who got the sweatiest and thus the stinkiest!)

Our summer camp participants braved the heat and rain in June and July at sites across the city, using our programs as a reason to get outside and get active. Over 300 kids, ages 6-14, received personal attention and positive coaching they would not otherwise have been able to afford.

Starfinder Maintains 100% Graduation Rate

On June 12th, 2013, we celebrated the graduation of our 28 high school seniors—from our program as well as from their high schools. For the 6th year in a row, 100% of Starfinder’s regularly-attending seniors completed high school. And all of them have either been accepted into or have plans to pursue college.

We Love Our Building, But…

It’s hard to believe that we just celebrated the 5th anniversary of the purchase of our magnificent facility here in Manayunk. The building has held up well with thousands of hours of usage, tens of thousands of users, and thankfully only a handful of soccer balls lost forever among the lights and insulation. Imagine what we might accomplish in an even more dynamic space!

On Friday, November 9th, Starfinder proudly presented ¡Golazo!, the beautiful mosaic mural adorning the outside of our building at 4015 Main Street in Manayunk. This sparkling 230-foot-long ode to soccer around the world was a labor of love and creativity by hundreds of our youth over the past two years.  Check out this article.

Assessment: Knowing How You’re Doing

One of the toughest challenges that every “for impact” organization faces (we refrain from using “non-profit” since no one needs profits more than we do) is identifying the time and resources to conduct meaningful program assessment and evaluation. At Starfinder we have worked feverishly to develop a culture where assessment and evaluation go hand-in-hand with program development and implementation....

Think Globally, Act Locally

Made popular as an environmental slogan in the 70’s, “Think Globally, Act Locally” has particular resonance with our programming here at Starfinder as so many of our young people are first or second generation Americans with origins across the globe. Soccer is the world’s most popular sport and serves as a wonderful entry point for learning about the many connections we share with other cultures and peoples around the world....

It's all about jobs!

The ongoing focus on unemployment and job creation is topic number one in the national political debate. Here at Starfinder we also know first-hand the impact that a paying job has on our Senior Leader participants. For the past two summers, we have created paid internships for over 20 of our most committed participants.  Now we are ecstatic to announce a new partnership with The Hill at Whitemarsh.

In the 5th annual C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital (Ann Arbor, Michigan) National Poll on Children’s Health, adults rate drug abuse and childhood obesity as the top health concerns and “big problems” for children.... As an organization committed to supporting the personal growth and development of young people, we are keenly aware of how these health issues have the potential to interrupt and side-track their aspirations. We are working diligently to make sure this doesn’t happen.
